Root-Friendly Driveway Design: Keep the Tree AND the Driveway

6 min readBy the Treesafe arborist team2026-08-04

It’s the classic Sunshine Coast dilemma: the magnificent tree that sold you the block sits exactly where the driveway needs to go. The usual answer — cut the roots, pour the concrete, hope for the best — usually ends with a dying tree and lifted concrete.

There’s a better way. With the right design, your driveway and your tree can share the same soil for decades.

Why standard driveways kill trees

Excavating 200–300mm for a standard slab severs the feeder roots that live in exactly that soil layer. Compact the subgrade with heavy machinery and you’ve suffocated what’s left. The tree declines slowly; the concrete cracks as remaining roots thicken. Everybody loses.

Designs that work with roots

Permeable pavers on a bridging base spread load without deep excavation. Curved alignments that swing around the protection zone. Raised or floating sections on piers for the critical area near the trunk. Root bridging with geogrid and no-dig surfaces. An arborist-marked plan lets your concreter choose the right tool for each metre.

Materials arborists like

Permeable segmental pavers top the list — flexible, repairable, and they let rain and oxygen reach roots. Reinforced gravel systems work beautifully for rural blocks. Standard poured concrete can still be used outside the protection zone; the art is in where it stops.

The process that saves grief

Get the TPZ mapped before design is finalised. Hand-excavate or air-spade near critical roots rather than ripping with a bucket. Prune unavoidable roots cleanly with a saw — torn roots decay, clean cuts compartmentalise. Then protect the area from compaction during the whole build.

The tree is worth more to your property value than the driveway surface. Design once, design well, and enjoy both for fifty years.
