Planning a Pool Around Trees? The Sunshine Coast Guide

A pool under a big shady tree looks like paradise in the brochure. In reality it can be a daily skimmer full of leaves, roots hunting the plumbing, and a pump working overtime — or, done right, the best backyard in the street.

The difference is decided before the excavator arrives.

Distance is your friend

Roots follow water and oxygen — and your pool shell changes both. As a rule, keep excavation outside the tree’s protection zone (your arborist calculates it from trunk diameter). If the dream spot is inside it, get an assessment before committing; some trees can be worked around, others are a hard no.

Species to keep far away

Heavy droppers like leopard trees and some figs will have you cleaning daily. Invasive-rooted species (many figs, some palms) treat pool plumbing as a target. Brittle trees like coral trees drop limbs into the water — and onto swimmers. If a problem species sits over the pool site, removal before construction is far cheaper than regret after.

The leaf-and-shade equation

Full shade means a cold pool and a working heater; full sun means evaporation and chlorine burn-off. Most owners want the morning-sun/afternoon-shade sweet spot — check where shadows fall at 3pm in summer before you dig. Deciduous-leaning species and higher canopies give you winter sun and summer relief.

Construction without carnage

Excavation near retained trees needs rules: no trenching through major roots (bore under instead), no soil level changes against trunks, and root pruning done cleanly by an arborist, not torn by a bucket. Ask your pool builder how they handle tree protection — the pause before their answer tells you a lot.

Pools and trees can absolutely coexist — but the tree conversation happens before the dig, not after the cracks.
