Planning a Deck or Patio Around Trees? Read This First

A deck wrapped around a shady tree is Queensland living at its finest — dappled light, cool timber, a cold drink within reach. Done carelessly, though, it becomes a slow-motion disaster: heaving boards, a strangled trunk, a tree that fails onto your favourite spot.

The good news: tree-friendly deck design is a solved problem. You just need to know the rules before the first post goes in.

Give the trunk room to grow

Trees get thicker every year. A trunk framed tightly by decking will push against it, girdling itself on the cut-out and lifting your boards. Leave a generous opening — think 300mm or more of clearance — and use removable trim pieces so the gap can grow with the tree.

Respect the roots

Post footings through the root zone are the killer. Solutions: adjust spacing to thread footings between major roots, use shallow pier or screw-pile footings instead of wide trenches, and hand-dig any footing inside the protection zone. A snapped 100mm root near the trunk can start a structural problem you’ll meet in the next storm.

Mind the microclimate

A solid deck changes everything beneath it — moisture, airflow, leaf litter. Leave gaps between boards for drainage, keep soil levels unchanged against the trunk (never pile fill or mulch against bark), and plan how you’ll clear fallen leaves before they stain and rot the timber.

Choose your partner tree wisely

Some species are patio nightmares — heavy fruit, invasive roots, brittle wood, constant litter. Others are angels. If you’re planting for the deck, ask us first; the right tree planted three metres further out beats the wrong tree removed in ten years’ time.

Design with the tree, not around it — a one-hour consult before you build can save the deck, the tree, and the dream.
