Renovating Near Trees? The Protection Plan That Saves Them (and Your DA)

6 min readBy the Treesafe arborist team2026-08-09

Every year, beautiful Queensland renovations are completed at the silent cost of the trees that made the property worth buying. The tree doesn’t die on construction day — it declines over the next three summers, long after the excavator left.

The tragedy is that it’s almost always preventable. A proper tree protection plan, drawn to Australian Standard AS 4970, keeps both your build and your trees on track.

Why trees die after construction

Roots aren’t deep — most live in the top 600mm of soil, spreading well beyond the canopy. Trenching through them, compacting soil with machinery, or raising soil levels suffocates them slowly. The canopy looks fine for a year or two, then thins, then fails.

The two zones that matter

AS 4970 defines the Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) — the no-go radius around the trunk — and the Structural Root Zone (SRZ), the inner circle where cutting roots can physically destabilise the tree. Your arborist calculates both from trunk diameter; your builder treats them like underground services.

What a real protection plan includes

Protection fencing erected before any machinery arrives; designated machinery routes with ground protection; hand-digging or boring near roots instead of trenching; no material storage or washouts inside the TPZ; and a sign-off inspection at completion. Simple disciplines — massive difference.

The approval angle

Councils increasingly require arborist documentation with development applications near significant trees. A professional TPZ plan doesn’t just protect the tree — it speeds your approval by showing assessment officers you’ve done the work properly.

Building near a tree you love? Book the protection plan before the draftsman finishes — it’s the cheapest insurance your landscape will ever get.
