Stump Grinding vs Full Removal: Which Is Right for Your Yard?

6 min readBy the Treesafe arborist team2026-05-07

The tree’s gone, the stump remains, and now you face the question every tree owner meets eventually: grind it, or dig it out entirely? Ask five people and you’ll get five confident, contradictory answers.

Here’s the honest comparison we give our own customers.

What grinding actually does

A stump grinder chews the stump and major root flare into chips, typically 150–300mm below ground level. The root system beyond stays and rots quietly over years. You get: speed (most stumps under an hour), minimal yard disruption, free mulch, and a surface ready for lawn or garden. Cost on the Sunshine Coast typically starts around $150–$300 depending on size and access.

What full removal involves

Excavation pulls the stump and primary roots out wholesale — a bigger machine, a bigger hole, and a bigger bill, plus spoil to deal with and ground to reinstate. It’s total, immediate, and occasionally necessary.

When removal beats grinding

Building over the exact spot (footings can’t sit on rotting roots). Severe root disease like Armillaria where removing inoculum matters. Replanting a large new tree in the identical position. Boundary or retaining-wall construction through the root zone. Outside these cases, grinding wins on value almost every time.

The regrowth question

Most species can’t regrow once ground below the collar — but persistent sprouters (camphor laurel, some figs, liquidambars) may need a follow-up treatment, which is quick and cheap. Termites prefer old stumps to sound houses, so either option beats leaving it.

Grind for gardens and lawns; excavate for footings and disease. Tell us what the spot needs to become, and we’ll tell you which one you need.
